Over the weekend, Meriwest employees volunteered at the Milpitas warehouse of Raising a Reader, a nonprofit organization that helps families develop, practice and sustain reading habits in their homes.
The charity focuses on providing programs that will help parents form book-sharing habits by using a training model, encourage literacy by consistently providing children with a bag that is filled with 8 books, and introduce and connect families to the library.
On Saturday, we assembled bags that were filled with books and other materials that will be distributed to local community organizations. Our group also made name tags for book bags and teacher bookmarks. In addition, Meriwest "raised readers" by donating 25 books to this nonprofit!
Anita Domondon, Meriwest Mortage's Vice President of Secondary Marketing, said she truly enjoyed volunteering with this organization because being around books always brings back fond memories of going to the library on Saturday afternoons with her dad. She said it was their special time together, and that those moments with him instilled in her a lifelong love of reading.
Since 1999, Raising a Reader's mission has been to engage literacy and book-sharing among children. They reach more than 130,000 children and families across 34 states each year, nearly 80% of whom are living at or below the poverty level.
Ms. Domondon said she firmly believes in Raising a Reader's mission to encourage readings because like a book, it opens up possibilities to gain knowledge, foster imagination, explore world cultures, and so much more. The possibilities are endless.
She and the rest of our employees truly had a great time volunteering!
