Serving Meals and Comfort to Those Facing Medical Crises

Published September 2, 2015

Our employees enjoyed spending time at the JW House on Monday evening, serving food to individuals and families who have loved ones in the hospital. The JW House is located on the site of Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center and is dedicated to providing a comfortable "home away from home" environment for families who are enduring medical crises.

Meriwest Operations Trainer Catherine Keydeniers, who volunteered at the JW House, said it was rewarding to see how much a simple dinner, made with fun and love, can touch someone so deeply.

The organization's Dinner is Served program is one of the most popular ways to get involved. Every night, guests are welcomed into the kitchen for dinner. Community volunteer groups and generous restaurants provide the food.

On Monday evening, Ms. Keydeniers and other Meriwest employees had a great time shopping for the ingredients we needed to make a delicious Italian dinner for 25 very deserving family members who call the JW House home while they are caring for someone in the hospital. We prepared and served Caesar green salad, cheese and garlic bread, pasta alfredo, pasta with meat bolognaise, chicken enchilada casserole, and dessert!

Our Community Relations Manager, Jill Popolizio, said it was nice to be able to give back to our community, especially by helping organizations like JW House that provide such a necessary service to families going through such difficult times. She said it was an honor to be a part of this because providing dinner was a simple yet impactful way to show these families that the community cares.

Anita Domondon, Meriwest Mortgage's Vice President of Secondary Marketing, also had a great time volunteering on Monday. She said she knows the last thing on JW House guests' mind is food, so it was well worth the effort to provide a nice meal because caretakers need taking care of too.

This is exactly what the JW House aims to do every day: provide patients' families and caregivers with sustenance, a time to rest and be cared for, and a sense of community support.

We want to thank JW House for letting us be a part of their home for the evening!
