Relay For Life Honors Those Lost, Those Fighting

Published May 3, 2017

Relay For Life is a community based fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. It not only raises money to find a cure for cancer, it gives people like Meriwest Director of Training Melissa Cleborne and her husband a way to help cope after someone has passed away from the disease.
“A very dear friend of mine was diagnosed with Cancer about seven years ago. We lost him after only six weeks. My husband and I were devastated,” Cleborne said. “Since then I have had many other friends and family members that were also diagnosed with this horrible disease.”

Cleborne elaborated that Relay For Life is a way to remember those we have lost to this horrible disease and support those who are still fighting the good fight.

“The most moving part of this event is the Luminaria ceremony,” she said. “At dusk, volunteers go around and light candles inside bags that have been decorated in memory of someone who we lost to cancer or in honor of someone who has survived. These bags then light the track for the rest of the night. I get goose bumps remembering this and how powerful it is to be with so many like-minded individuals who are fighting for such a great cause.”

Not only does the event focus on remembering those lost and honoring those who are fighting, it also focuses on education, Cleborne said.

“There are many signs and flyers around the track reminding people to eat healthy, stop smoking, get preventative screenings, etc.,” she said. “I learn so much about how to try and limit my risks.”

To support an upcoming walk that Melissa will be participating in, she and the Human Resources department of Meriwest held an internal fundraiser for employees to help donate to the cause.  An incredible $1,500 was raised!
