Charity of the Month: American Heart Association

Published June 1, 2017

This may surprise you: Stroke rates continue to decline among older baby boomers, while more than doubling in younger people, Meriwest Financial Center Manager Maria Sanchez said. In honor of May being National Stroke Awareness, Sanchez and her department decided to support the American Heart Association.

“We all know friends and family who are disabled and have lost their lives to a stroke,” Sanchez said. “Eighty percent of all strokes are preventable and because anyone can have a stroke, it’s important for everyone to be aware of the F.A.S.T. warning signs.” (Listed below.)

Through a bake sale and raffle for health-related popular items, which included Bose Wireless ear phones, Fitbit, Nutri-bullet, Wonder Core and Coffee Press, Meriwest employees were able to raise $1,310 for the association.

F.A.S.T. warning signs:
Face drooping
Arm weakness
Speech difficulty
Time to call 9-1-1

“The knowledge of these stroke warning signs and the importance of prompt stroke treatment can greatly improve survival and recovery,” Sanchez said. “The website has an important video that shows how the right stroke treatment, right away, can save lives and improve recovery."
